The Conjuring is a new horror film directed by James Wan (Insidious, Saw). Based on a true story, Paranormal Investigators, Ed and Lorraine Warren, help out a family who is being threatened by an unknown presence in their house. This is one of the most horrifying cases the Warren’s have ever dealt with.
This was one of my most anticipated features this year. I am a big fan of James Wan last movie, Insidious. It was one of the scariest films I have ever seen. It is always a pleasure going to the theater and getting a good scare. The Conjuring definitely delivered on all of those levels. Insidious was scarier but I feel The Conjuring was structured better, making it a more entertaining movie. The Conjuring was a believable and realistic paranormal film. It was creepy in almost every aspect, especially the doll that is in it. I hate dolls…
What makes The Conjuring so creepy was the cinematography and the music. James Wan uses the camera beautifully and gave us some heart pounding sequences. My favorite shot is when one of the daughters is looking under her bed, making the camera twist and turn. Wan didn't really give the audience anything new when it came to creating scares. He just gave us a good old fashioned horror flick. The visual effects were great, especially the make up on the actors. All of the ghosts faces will stick in your mind, even when you sleep. Joseph Bishara composed the eerie sounds for this movie. His music creates more tension to allow for the ultimate scare factor. Bishara also plays the main demon and is hidden underneath all that makeup. This wasn't his first time as a demon, he played the red demon in Insidious.
The cast was great which featured Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga, Ron Livingston and Lili Taylor. Wilson and Farmiga played the Warrens. Farmiga was the stand out role and carried much of this film. The family consisted of five daughters and each of the child actors did a great job. But I'm glad the focus wasn't on the children, otherwise I may not have liked it as much. I'm not the biggest fan of child actors.
I highly recommend you seeing this in the theater. It will definitely scare you and whomever you are with. It’s probably best to see it during the day so it’s not the last thing you see before you go to sleep. This is a new horror classic and I can't wait to see what else James Wan has up his sleeves. He has Insidious Part II coming out in September and he is going to direct Fast & Furious 7.
