MoviePass is a new service (currently in Beta) that allows movie goers the chance to see “unlimited” movies in theaters. It is subscription-based service that you pay month to month.
How it works
It is very simple, all you need is an iPhone or an Android phone to access the MoviePass App and a special MoviePass debit card. Open the app, find a time and theater you’d like to see a movie. Once you get to the theater, using the MoviePass app, check into the theater. That will trigger your card to activate and money will be loaded onto it so you can purchase your ticket at any kiosk or cashier.
MoviePass has different options you can choose from. I paid for an annual subscription for $25 and $35 monthly payment. There is an early termination fee if you want to cancel your subscription before the year is up. Once the year is up, you don’t have to pay again and you keep your monthly payment. The monthly payment can vary depending on your region. As far as I know it can be as low as $25. Since I am in the NYC region and ticket prices are higher, the monthly fee is a little bit more. If you don’t want an annual subscription, there are more expensive options when you pay monthly. If you are an avid movie-goer like me, it’s worth getting the annual pass.
MoviePass works at 93% of theaters, pretty much where ever Discover Card is accepted. MoviePass and Discover patented a type of debit card specifically for this service. You can’t use this card for any other purposes and are only valid at movie theaters. As of now, you can only see 2D films, 3D and IMAX are not available. I had put quotes around unlimited earlier because it’s not quite unlimited. You are allowed to see one film per day and you can’t see the same film twice. There can only be one person on the membership at a time but they are looking to change that in the future. I was skeptical to try MoviePass but it has received a lot of positive feedback.
I received my card and have been to the movies four times in the past week. Yes, that is a lot but I was excited to use my card and it works great. It hasn't given me any problems and I am excited to keep using it. If you are interested in the service, I have some more invites that I can give out. I think it is worth the money if you see at least one movie a week.
