Blue Jasmine is the latest film from writer-director Woody Allen. Jasmine is a narcissistic socialite from New York City who moves to San Francisco to live with her sister. She is having a life crisis and must cope with the drastic changes. Jasmine has to pull her life back together to get on track again.
Woody Allen has been nominated and won several Oscars over the course of his life. He is 77 years old and shows no sign of slowing down. Woody always manages to bring together an incredible cast of actors. Blue Jasmine featured some great performances by its ensemble cast.
Cate Blanchett (Lord of the Rings Trilogy and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), who plays Jasmine, had one of the best performances that I have seen from her since The Aviator. Even though I loved her performance, I absolutely hated her character. I don’t think I’ve had a love/hate feeling towards an actor’s performance in the past. She played this high class woman who is oblivious to almost everything around her. Jasmine has high anxiety which makes her prone to nervous breakdowns. I really hope Cate Blanchett is awarded for her magnificent performance. She was accompanied with an amazing cast which was able to bring out the best in her.
Blue Jasmine's cast included Alec Baldwin, Sally Hawkins (Jane Eyre, An Education) Bobby Carnavale (Boardwalk Empire, The Other Guys), Andrew Dice Clay (Entourage, One Night at McCool's), Louis C.K. and Peter Sarsgaard (Knight & Day, Jarhead). Andrew Dice Clay took me by surprise as Jasmines ex-brother in law. He is known for his stand up comedy but never realized he can act. Bobby Carnavale hasn’t blown up yet but I’m sure you have seen him in plenty of movies. He did a great job as Jasmine’s sister, Ginger played by Hawkins, new boyfriend.
Aside from the acting, Blue Jasmine was a fantastic look inside the mind of Jasmine. To be honest, it is a pretty depressing movie. You slowly see Jasmine spiraling down the path of emptiness and it is a journey worth taking. Woody Allen used continuous long shots which worked well with a lot of his sequences of character interactions. He manages to create unique characters in all of his movies and is able to bring out the best in his actors.
Woody Allen fans will definitely be impressed by his new movie, Blue Jasmine. He continues to amaze audiences almost every year with a new film. I recommend seeing Blue Jasmine if you can, it is a fantastic film with a lot of great performances. If you don’t like being depressed at the movies, then maybe skip it.
4/5 - Great
