Fruitvale Station is based on the tragic true story of Oscar Grant III. In the early morning hours of New Years Day of 2009, a police officer shot Oscar on a train platform. This film recalls the events of his last day of his life as he crosses paths with his friends, family, strangers and enemies.
Fruitvale Station is a powerful and moving film by amateur director, Ryan Coogler. He creates a heartfelt story about a young man whose life was taken away from him too early. Throughout his last day, Oscar tries to fix some of his problems and make a new beginning for himself. The care he presents for his family and friends is overwhelming. Fate intervenes and he is given opportunities to help others in need.
Michael B. Jordan (Chronicle, The Wire) plays the role of Oscar and did a phenomenal job of his portrayal. He gives the audience a sense of realism while interacting with others. You know the outcome of Oscar’s fate but you try so dearly not to think about it. Jordan is a rising star and he will continue to shine in every film he is in. Coogler chose wisely when he casted Jordon in Fruitvale Station
Fruitvale Station is Ryan Coogler’s first full length feature film that he wrote and directed. Coogler wanted to show how Oscar affected the lives of the people around him. There were some great scenes of the interaction between Oscar and his daughter, especially a simple foot race. It is a scene that brought a little tear to my eye knowing what will happen to Oscar. Ryan Coogler is only 27 years old that has a very long and promising career ahead of him. This film is getting a lot of people’s attention and will surely be a contender during awards season.
Fruitvale Station is gaining critical acclaim and is a movie you should see. Luckily it has a pretty wide release for an independent movie. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler. I definitely recommend anyone to go out and see this movie. I’m sure it will be around during awards season and you will be able to say, “Hey, I saw that movie!”
