The Spectacular Now is a coming of age tale about a partying high school senior. He lives in the now and intends on keeping it that way. He is satisfied with his life but things change after his girlfriend dumps him. Unexpectedly, he meets an average, nice girl whom he would normally pay to attention too. She changes him in ways he wouldn’t imagine.
I was fortunate enough to see an advanced screening of The Spectacular Now earlier this year. I put this movie in my top ten so far of 2013. It was written by the same guys, Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, who gave us 500 Days of Summer. They created another remarkable story and magnificent set of characters. Sutter, played by Miles Teller (21 & Over, Project X), is a kid who doesn’t care about much besides socializing and partying. He’s not thinking about his future and is content on working at a local retail suit store. Aimee, played by Shailene Woodley (The Descendants, The Secret Life of an American Teenager), is a quiet but friendly girl who helps Sutter discover himself. This film is stylishly written, has plenty of laughs and has a lot of heart.
Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley were brilliant on screen together. Miles teller is an actor that you have to look out for because this is going to be his breakout role. Sutter is underachiever that you shouldn’t care for but Teller did such an exceptional job at letting the audience into his life. There was such mystery to Sutter and Aimee helped us understand him. Shailene gave another superb performance and she is on track to becoming one of the biggest names in Hollywood. What I loved most about Aimee, Shailene made her such a cute plain Jane. Woodley did not wear any make-up to give more realism to her character. I’m excited to see where Woodley and Teller’s careers are going. Both of them can be seen in the upcoming young adult book adaptation of Divergent with Woodley as the main character.
The Spectacular Now is a film that you shouldn’t miss out on. Unfortunately, it has such a limited release right now but hopefully it will expand to more theaters in the upcoming weeks. It was a wonderful story and fascinating characters due to their contrast. Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley are mesmerizing and I want you to see the movie where they became big movie stars.
