Scientists tried to fix global warming on Earth but instead they turned it into a giant freezer killing off all living beings. The last survivors are aboard a train that continually travels around the world. The train is split between the high class and the low class. The passengers in the lower class plan to start an uprising against the upper class in hopes to take over the train after they are continually mistreated.
Snowpiercer not only has a dumb title, it also has a plot that sounds it as well. If someone were to judge this film by what I just said, they would be very wrong. Snowpiercer is a brilliant film that keeps you captivated in it's entirety. Director Joon-Ho Bong (The Host ) did an amazing job on how he shot this film. The entire movie is set aboard this train and he immerses the audience without making one feel claustrophobic. The different set pieces were great as it transitioned slowly from the lower class cars to the upper class. The action sequences were excellently filmed which displayed some brutal close quarter hand to hand combat. I can't remember a movie that was set entirely about a train. A movie like this can easily become a failure but Bong is always introducing new environments and surprises throughout the film and it keeps the viewer wanting more. At the two hour runtime, the film moves along rather quickly.
Chris Evans (Captain America, The Avengers) played Curtis who is a lower class passenger. His friend Edgar, played by Jamie Bell (Jumper, King Kong), is along side him during their rebellion and they are being led by Gilliam, played by legendary actor John Hurt (V For Vendetta, Alien). Tilda Swinton (Moonrise Kingdom, Only Lovers Left Alive) is a Minister who is second in command on the train. Her character was so outlandish but fantastic in all the best ways. Her character acts and speaks in a way that could make her seem kind-hearted but there isn't a good bone in her body. Evans gives a great performance and delivers a chilling story that will leave you with goosebumps. It was my favorite scene of his from any film.
I don't have much more to say about Snowpiercer but I really hope more people get to see this film since I believe it is one of the best movies of the year. The set pieces in it are worth seeing alone and Bong did something unique creating the environments that surrounded his characters. To my knowledge there isn't another movie like this and I highly recommend seeing Snowpiercer.
4/5 - Great
