Five cosmic space travelers Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket and Groot all meet under different circumstances and fight with each other until they realize that they all have something in common. They form an unlikely bond in hopes to rid the galaxy of the evil, Ronan the Accuser.
Guardians of the Galaxy is the 10th film to be released in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the least known comic book series to be adapted to film. This was a bet that Marvel was confident would pay out but many others had their doubt's. Captain America: The Winter Soldier was released earlier this year and became a huge success. It seemed highly unlikely that Guardians on the Galaxy would come close to it. I think its safe to say that it exceeded the expectations of millions leaving Guardians of the Galaxy as one of the best Marvel films to date.
James Gunn (Slither, Super) was hired to write and direct this film. He was the perfect choice to bring these cast of characters to life due to his wild sense of humor. When he was brought on board, there was already a script which he basically gutted and rewrote along with Nicole Perlman, an unknown writer. He added his own quarks to give the film more comedic relief and blended it so well with the action scenes and the more serious parts of the film. Guardians of the Galaxy is definitely the funniest film in the MCU and that's due to the actors that were casted the play the five leading roles.
The Guardians of the Galaxy include Peter Quill aka Star-Lord, played by Chris Pratt (Parks and Rec, Zero Dark Thirty), who was abducted as a child from Earth and grows up to be a scavenger in the depths of space. Gamora, played by Zoe Saldana (Avatar, Star Trek), is the adopted daughter of the mad Titan, Thanos, who trained her to be a skilled assassin. Drax the Destroyer, played by Dave Bautista (Riddick), is looking for vengeance for the death of his family. Rocket, voiced by Bradley Cooper (The Hangover, American Hustle) is a genetically enhanced Raccoon who is accompanied by his tree like friend, Groot, voiced by Vin Diesel (Fast and Furious).
Chris Pratt is a perfect fit for the role of Star-Lord. He was hilarious, charming and exciting to watch on the screen because his character was so unpredictable. Pratt is a rising movie star and I can't wait to see more of him. Zoe Saldana as Gamora was good but I felt like she was one of the weaker characters. I wanted to see the relationship between her and her father Thanos more but I know we will in future films. I was surprised by how much I liked Dave Batista's performance as Drax. His character was always trying to act tough but that is what made his character hilarious. Drax doesn't understand what a metaphor is and it leads to some of the funniest parts of the movie. People I have talked to seem to think Rocket stole the movie but I disagree. Don't get me wrong, I loved him everything about him but I think the cast all had their shining moments and none of them stood out more in front of the other. Cooper did a great job at voicing him and bringing the Raccoon to life. Groot was awesome! The only line that Groot can speak is, "I am Groot.". I was a little surprised that Vin Diesel was cast as the voice of Groot because of only having to say one line. But Diesel did a great job and he delivered the one line with a different tone every time. Event during the fight scenes, I could tell that the grunt noises were Diesel because of his distinct voice.
The visual effects were absolutely stunning especially the characters of Rocket and Groot. Its amazing to see how far technology has come. They are two of the main characters and they blend so well with the others that I don't even think about how they were made with CGI. They helped carry this film and without proper CGI work, if could have been a disaster. The planets that were created looked breathtaking and were so vibrant with color. All of the set pieces throughout the film were awesome and there were a lot of them. It felt like they were always going somewhere new and only returned to the same places a few times. A lot of planets were introduced but I never felt lost due to Gunn's excellent world building.
Being that the Guardians of the Galaxy had to be introduced to the world, Marvel took the safe route and used a generic story plot where the good guys must stop a bad buy from destroying something of significance (i.e. planet, population). Now that the characters are known, I hope there is more of a complex story in the sequel. It's really hard to find things that I dislike about the film because I enjoyed it so much.
So if you're still reading this article then you should know that I definitely think you should check out Guardians of the Galaxy in theaters. Its one of the best movies in the MCU as well as this year. This film is thrilling, hilarious, and it even brought a tear to my eye. I'll be seeing it again in the near future and I can't wait for the sequel in a few years.
There is a scene during and after the credits so don't forget to stay for that.
